THE FOOL'S JOURNEY

The journey of The Fool, through the Tarot, is a spiritual journey. When one starts the study of the Tarot, he or she is in essence asking to be taken on a spiritual journey. Some, like myself, may not have realized this, but a journey will be taken none-the-less.

The 22 "Keys" of the Tarot are called the Major Arcana. Arcana means secrets, so these 22 Tarot Cards speak of the Major Secrets. When one starts with The Fool, they start on the beginning of wonderful, yet sometimes profound journey into the inner teachings of the mysteries. We will follow this journey through out the next few ezines.

Why do we always start with The Fool? Well, The Fool represents us (our Soul energy) before we manifest. The Fool is shown with a Zero on top. It is not a mistake when we think of zero as nothing, but you might want to hyphenate so it reads the NO - thing. Follis (the Latin word that Fool comes from) means wind or bag of wind. When we look towards many of the creation myths and scriptures, God (or the Creator) often blows life into an inanimate creature to give it life. Our Soul is the bag for Spirits life to be made manifest. I sometimes see The Fool as the drip of water coming from the celestial bathtub. It comes from a sense of oneness while in the Tub, yet begins it’s individualization as it leaps over the edge and gets ready to hit the floor. If we think of the oneness with God that our Soul is said to enjoy when back in the light (heaven) as the water in the bathtub, we see The Fool as our soul individualizing as we make ready to spend the current incarnation on Earth.

When ever you confront The Fool, get ready for a new beginning of some sorts! Pack your bag of tricks and be ready to hit the floor running!

The Magician is the next card we meet in our spiritual journey. The number of The Magician is I. You most often see the numbers as Roman Numerals. I have had to eat the "when would we EVER need to know roman numerals" comment from grade school.

The Magician represents The Fool as his first step of the journey on Earth. The Magician is very SELF conscious, and in this I mean aware of the self (little s). It is here that we realize that we are human. Yet, with a clear connection to Spirit, we are able to create anything we wish. We learn to use our will to work with Divine Will. The tough lesson comes when we use our will for our own selfish means! That will be talked more about in future writings! For now, we will just say that the Power of the Magician is will (small w).

Because of the ability to uses ones will, you will find that The Magician can achieve anything he or she puts their mind too. Entrepreneurial and charismatic are two strong traits. The Magician has opened the bag of The Fool and found the four elements. With these, now manifested, The Magician is creator on Earth.

Ahh, The High Priestess! Everyone is enamored by her. Roman Numeral II is hers and getting to know and understand her can be a lifetime undertaking in itself. In Christianity, she is the Virgin Mary. In Egypt, they know her as Isis (before she gave birth to Horus). She is often seen as our subconscious or unconscious. Her blue gown starts the river of the unconscious that runs through out the Tarot. (In the Rider Waite deck). She is our intuition and our inner teacher. She is in charge of the mystery schools and our inner education. Her power is Intuition and she uses that to maintain her secrecy.

The High Priestess communicates through hidden meanings, unclaimed thoughts and unhindered hunches. When spending time with The High Priestess, she commands your commitment and often scares away those of us unready for her depth. When The Fool is living through her, The Fool comprehends that one can learn through exerting one’s will like The Magician, yet it is also important to attain the power of following inner guidance. How to acquire that skill is gained through spending quiet time with The High Priestess.

Spirit and our human side.

We all have our spiritual side and our human side. Many of us struggle to identify our spirit because we hear so much about how we need to be in touch with it. Sometimes our own humanness is what stops us from ever touching spirit and we do it so unconsciously. We get caught up in our day-to-day issues and dreams of what we feel we can't have or do not deserve. So many of us live with our hopes and fears that we cause our own depressions disease and suffering. When we hear there is a spiritual side within that will help us, we run to the person or system that is trying to communicate on how to get in touch with Spirit. Instead (most of the time) we get principles, doctrines or systems of principles proclaimed by religions or churches. Great, our human side again wins with rules on how to govern ourselves. This can stir our hearts and minds and for many of us this is very satisfying. The human side loves hard and fast things it can hold on to like rules and rituals. We, as humans, need this to satisfy our humanness. For many of us, this is the way we lean to know Spirit. Spirit exists within us and we grow as humans. But wasn't our original wish to grow spiritually or at least to touch Spirit. Well, growth as humans can only take us so far.

I know a wonderful loving and compassionate person who has also experienced a near death. She teaches a process to touch your own spirit and she taught me "Spirit is simple and efficient". I've also read that Buddhist believe we have a duality known as body (form) and mind (spirit). Mankind has tried to identify where the spirit or mind exists within us. Some say its in our head or heart. These are physical parts of us and have form they can't be Spirit they are our human side. Spirit lives past our human form so how can it exist in our head or heart, the organs of our body. Well, if we know that Spirit lives beyond our human form, than when we focus on Spirit, we must leave the humanness behind. Remember as my friend said, "simple and efficient". Spirit is clarity of vision and knowing. Spirit comes to many of us when we no longer feel our body like in meditation or when we exercise beyond a certain point. We can be listening to the ocean or a creek trickling over the rocks and lose track of our-self and Spirit is there. Just there, not hiding or playing games, Spirit is always there for all of us when we want to listen.

Oh my - could it be that simple that all we have to do is listen. If you walk up to a bird slowly and with loving intent the bird might sing a song once the bird is satisfied you aren't going to harm it. Spirit is like the bird. If we are quiet Spirit will sing for us. But if you walk up to a bird in an uncaring manner, making noise, the bird will take flight so quickly you will soon loose sight of it. Again we can draw a parallel with Spirit. We need to quiet our human side to start hearing Spirit's beautiful song. Once we start to recognize Spirit in our life, we realize its more than just hearing Spirit, it's a feeling, a seeing or a state of being. All of our senses like touch, seeing and hearing feed our mind and our spirit.

The end point is Spirit and the human side needs to integrate into one state of being.
