Technical Problems and Solutions:

Unable to download the demo.

Versions: All

Description: The download stops with an error message.

Solution: Try again at a less busy time. The Internet is a large network of various computers. When the network gets busy anywhere between you and our website, any one of these computers might drop the connection. Try a weekend morning or some other slow time. If several attempts fail, let us know and we can try to send you a demo disk.

Error message about winhelp.exe when using the Vietnamese Lessons

Versions: Windows 2000, Windows XP

Description: When choosing "Vietnamese Lessons" from the Start Menu, you see the error "Executing winhelp.exe rather than winhlp32.exe because this help file uses a 16 bit DLL"

Solution: Follow the following procedure

1. Use the left mouse button to click on "Start, All Programs, Vietnamese". Use the right mouse button to click on "Vietnamese Lessons". Use the left mouse button to click on "Properties" and then click on the "General" tab. Write down the directory name shown next to "Location:." For example it might be "C:\Documents And Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Vietnamese".
2. Click "Cancel".
3. Click "Start, My Computer". Navigate to the directory name from Step 1 and find the file called "Vietnamese Lessons".
4. Use the right mouse button to click on Vietnamese Lessons. Use the left mouse button to click on Rename. Type the name "Old Vietnamese Lessons" and then hit the Enter key.
5. Click "File, New Shortcut". The "Create Shortcut" Wizard will appear.
6. In the location field, type "winhelp.exe c:\alittlev\alittlev.hlp" and click "Next"
7. In the name field, type "Vietnamese Lessons". Click "Finish"
8. Test the new shortcut by clicking "Start, All Programs, Vietnamese, Vietnamese Lessons".
9. Delete the old shortcut called "Old Vietnamese Lessons" by clicking on it with the right mouse button and then using the left mouse button to click "Delete".

Error during installation on Windows 98

Versions: All versions on Windows 98 only

Description: The installation might fail with the message: ISINST30 caused a general protection fault.

Solution: This is a conflict between MS-Wheel or other drivers and the installation program. You must disable MS-Wheel or the other drivers until the program is successfully installed. The possible solutions are listed from easiest to most-difficult. Try the easiest one first.

Possible Solution 1

1. On Japanese Windows 98, the error occurs after the program has been completely installed. Restart the computer and then press Start, Programs, Vietnamese, Vietnamese Exercises.
2. On English Windows 98, the error occurs before the program has been installed. You must try one of the other solutions below.

Possible Solution 2

1. Press Alt-Ctrl-Delete to bring up the task manager
2. Select mswheel.exe if you see it and then press End Task
3. Select any other mouse driver which you might have, such as glide, and then press End Task
4. Install "A Little Vietnamese"
5. Restart the computer to restart MS-Wheel or any other mouse driver which you might have.

Possible Solution 3

1. Restart your computer.
2. Close every program that is running including antivirus and screensaver programs.
3. Press Alt-Ctrl-Delete to bring up the task manager
4. Select any program that is still running other than Systray, Em_exec, and Explorer
5. Press End Task
6. Install "A Little Vietnamese"
7. Restart the computer to restart your antivirus, screensaver and other programs.

Possible Solution 4

1. Write to us at our email address.

No sound at any time

Versions: All

Description: You never hear any sound from the program.

Solution: Follow the following procedure

1. Use the File Manager to find the CD-ROM file called D:\AV\AEB\AO\DI.WAV or the demo file called C:\ALVDEMO\AV\AEB\AO\DI.WAV. (The floppy disk version does not have sound)
2. Double click on this file. You should hear a voice which says "Grandfather" in English.
3. If you don't hear the voice say "Grandfather", check the following
   • Check that you have a soundcard installed in your computer.
   • Check that either speakers or earphones are plugged into your computer.
   • Check that the earphones are unplugged if you want to hear your speakers.
   • Check that the volume knob or dial is turned up.
   • Look for a program which came with your computer called "Mixer" or "Volume Control" and adjust the volume using that program.
4. When you finally hear the word "Grandfather" then you will know your computer is ready.
5. Be sure that your CD-ROM is in the drive which you used when you installed the software.

No sound in one of the exercises

Versions: All

Description: You don't hear any sound in an exercise, but you hear sound in other parts of the program.

Solution: Press the right mouse button to access the Configuration Window and verify that you have not disabled the spoken words.

The Vietnamese font does not appear on Windows 2000

Versions: All

Description: Instead of seeing a Vietnamese font, one sees strange non-Vietnamese characters.

Solution: Shutdown your computer and the start it up again. This will properly install the font. (For some reason, the "restart" in Windows 2000 sometimes does only a partial restart instead of a full restart so it is insufficient.)

Font problems and error messages with Version 1.2 or earlier on Windows NT

Versions: 1.2 and earlier

Description: The Vietnamese font doesn't install properly. Every time the Vietnamese Lessons start, you see an error message. You see an error message which says "GDI Fail" during the Matching Game.

Solution: Version 1.2 and earlier only work with Windows 3.1 and Windows 95. Version 1.21 fixes all of the Windows NT problems. You need to upgrade to Version 1.21. Send us e-mail with your license number and tell us you need an upgrade.

The Vietnamese font does not appear on Chinese Windows 95 or Korean Windows 95.

Versions: All

Description: Instead of seeing a Vietnamese font, one sees Chinese or Korean characters.

Solution: Chinese and Korean Windows convert any non-English characters into Chinese and Korean characters. This makes it difficult to see European and Vietnamese characters on these operating systems. The problem can be fixed by following these directions

Cannot use the electronic order form

Versions: All

Description: The electronic order form doesn't work on your web browser.

Solution: Call our phone number to order. Our phone number is 707-793-9084. The order form uses encryption to protect your credit card number. Some countries and some companies do not allow encrypted messages and therefore the order form might not work in your country or company.

The "Dictionary" button at the top of the Vietnamese Lessons doesn't work.

Versions: All versions in Windows 95 only.

Description: Pressing the "Dictionary" button works the first time, but not the second time.

Solution: This problem seems to only affect Windows 95. It is not a problem for Windows 3.1 or Windows NT. There are two possible solutions for this problem.

• Solution #1 : Use the Dictionary button in the lessons to start the dictionary the first time. From then on, just use the Dictionary button on your Windows 95 task manager at the bottom of your monitor. This button always works fine.
• Solution #2: After using the dictionary, dismiss it using the "Cancel" button or the X in the upper right. If you do this, the "Dictionary" button will always work fine.

If you see this problem in Windows 98, please let us know. We don't have any reports of this happening on Windows 98 yet.

The pictures have the wrong colors or the pictures are grainy.

Versions: All

Description: The colors in the pictures do not look like natural colors or the pictures are very grainy.

Solution: To get good colors, your video card and your monitor must be capable of displaying at least 256 colors at 640x480 resolution.

The pictures look best if shown in at least 256 colors. Change the settings of your video card to allow at least 256 colors.

If your video card is set for 640x480 resolution, you might see grainy pictures in the matching game because the pictures must be shrunk to fit on the display. To get better picture quality, increase your display resolution to 1024x768 if this setting is available on your video card.

Here is how to change the number of colors or the resolution:

• In Windows 3.1, you can change your display resolution using Windows Setup which is normally in the group named Main. You should first make a backup of your C:\WINDOWS directory especially WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI. Do not change the display resolution unless you know which resolutions are acceptable on your system because it is difficult to change it back if it does not work.
• In Windows 95, 98 and NT, you can change your display resolution by moving the mouse to an empty area of the screen and then pressing the right mouse button. Then choose Properties and then choose Settings. Windows 95 and 98 are much better than Windows 3.1 because they automatically change back to the original setting if the new setting does not work. Windows NT is almost as good; it makes you test the new setting and then approve the new setting, but it does not automatically change back to the original setting if the new setting does not work.

No pictures appear in the flash cards and the matching game, even though the blue status bar indicates that pictures are being prepared for display.

Versions: All

Description: No pictures appear in the flash cards or the matching game.

Solution: Press the right mouse button to access the configuration menu. Verify that you have not disabled the pictures.

If you do not have at least a 4x CD-ROM drive, the flash cards might go too fast for your CD-ROM drive. You can push the square Stop Button to wait for the pictures and then push the green Play Button to continue. Or you can press the right mouse button to access the configuration window, and then reduce the speed of the flash cards.

You hear words being spoken when you are not using the program.

Versions: All

Description: The program is talking in the background when you are not using it.

Solution: You probably left the flash cards running. This is a feature which you can turn on or off. Go to the flash card window. Then press the right mouse button to access the configuration window. Then choose "Pause if another window is active". Then press OK. Now the flash cards will not speak unless you are actively using them.

You don't hear the flash cards anymore if you move to another window.

Versions: All

Description: The flash cards stop talking when you use another program. You want them to keep talking so you can study while doing other tasks.

Solution: You can make the flash cards speak even when you are not watching them. This is a feature which you can turn on or off. Go to the flash card window. Then press the right mouse button to access the configuration window. Then remove the check by "Pause if another window is active". Then press OK. Now the flash cards will speak even when you are not actively watching them.

You don't know how to type the Vietnamese characters which appear in the dictionary.

Versions: All

Description: You need to learn to type Vietnamese characters to use the dictionary.

Solution: When using the dictionary, click on the Swap button until Vietnamese is on the left and English is on the right. Now press Help and follow the directions for typing Vietnamese characters.

The exercises don't remember which font color is chosen.

Versions: All

Description: The exercises don't permanently use the colors you select.

Solution: The exercises always start with your default Window colors. To change your default colors in Windows 3.1, go to the Control Panel and run the Color application. To change your default colors in Windows 95, move the mouse to an empty area of your screen. Then press the right mouse button. Then select Properties and then select Appearance.

The "Prior Topic" link doesn't go back to the last topic you were reading.

Versions: All

Description: The "Prior Topic" link doesn't take you to the last page you were looking at.

Solution: Press "Back" or the "b" key whenver you want to go back to the previous page which you were reading. The Prior Topic link always jumps to the preceding topic in the current lesson sequence. This might or might not be the last topic you were looking at.

The operating system is missing a DLL

Versions: All

Description: The program reports "Cannot find _____.DLL"

Solution: If the missing DLL is one of the DLL's below, try downloading it by doing the following:

1. Click on one of the DLL's below using the right mouse button.
2. Press "Save Link As.."
3. Save the file in your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
   • Note: Do not overwrite an existing file. If you have an existing file with the same name, copy the existing file to a safe place before saving the new DLL.
4. Restart your computer.
